The human spirit does not originate from the sands of this earth! While the physical body is of the earth, the inner core which makes the real human being is not material. This inner core, which is the spirit has its origin in the Spiritual part of Creation which is far above this our physical world.

Man starts out from the Spiritual Part of Creation as a spiritual seed, which has the prospect of developing into a fully matured human spirit. In order to attain to this maturity, the human spirit seed had to be expelled from the Spiritual part of Creation onto the earth which serves as a school.

It arrives on earth as unconscious human spirit seed in the hope that eventually during its sojourn at these lower parts of Creation it will learn about the Will of God and follow God’s Commandments; this being the way to attain the maturity that will lead it back in the upwards direction to the Spiritual part of Creation from where it originates in the first place.

So, in summary, man is on earth in order to gain from the experiences of life in the material part of Creation. He gains maturity thereby and this then leads it back home. That is the purpose of life on earth. Man should therefore value this period of life on earth, waste no time but use same for the necessary maturing. The period of learning described here is indeed a Grace and Gift from the Almighty! Man has to show appreciation for this grace by seeking always to find out and then do the Will of his Maker.

Many have taken the view that life is vanity upon vanity. Can this really be true?

There is no one whose existence on earth is without purpose, unless he makes his life purposeless! The purpose of life on earth is simple. We are here to learn the Laws of God, live in accordance with them and mature thereby! This knowledge of the Laws of God is to be attained by a full grasp of the Word of Truth.

Where one makes the pursuit of material gains, fame and fortune the sole reason for living, then life becomes a race. There will be no time left to consider that which is really of deep significance, that which concerns the real man, his core which is the spirit! The attainment of the material benefits on their own is of benefit to the transient part of man, his ego and his earthly reputation. If his real core remains neglected, eventually inner emptiness makes itself felt and such a life can be described as being in vain for the most important part aspect of life which is the spiritual has been left unattended.

When we make it a priority to feed our spirit with spiritual food which is the Word of Truth, then will be able to live a life of service to God, a life based on love and harmony with our surroundings which is pleasing to our Maker. This way, our life will be worthwhile, we will feel fulfilled, be at peace and be happy. Such a life will certainly not be one of vanity upon vanity.

Since the purpose of our lives is to gain spiritual maturity by recognising the Laws of our Creator and living accordingly, we need to use our time in engaging in activities that will help us achieve this purpose.

We should not be deceived like the multitudes who have made the acquisition of earthly possessions the main object of their lives. Yes, many are always thinking about money and how to have plenty of it in order to live in a certain style they consider as comfortable. Such an attitude causes distractions that blocks one from what we have identified as the main purpose of life. The money chaser really has no time for higher aims or the time to work on spiritual ascent. Such a person thereby binds himself to what is purely material, thus losing the ability to look upwards and ascend.

Apart from chasing money, many chase titles, positions or fame and make these their life ambition. Where one neglects all that concerns the wellbeing of his spirit for the sake of these things then such a life is a total waste and can be described as a life of vanity upon vanity. And the question to ask in such situations will be: what shall it profit a man if he were to gain the whole earth and lose his spirit?

Furthermore, man does not gain in the true sense nor does it hold eternal values for him if he becomes the fastest runner, a skilful boxer, a winner of a beauty pageant or if he knows whether the horse appeared on earth before or after the fly! All of these are what in scripture has been described as chasing after the wind! In all simplicity: they are all about our craving for self-esteem, power and earthly possessions.

However, what we need to do in the first place, as priority is that which helps in our spiritual advancement and ascent and thus also serves to further Creation and our fellow men. By this is meant that apart from working on our spiritual aspirations we should also fulfil the earthly tasks that are enjoined on us during our journey here on earth. We can set earthly goals, be the best in what we do for a living as long as we do not harm others in the pursuit of these goals. In all our activities we should ask ourselves what good advantage they will bring both to ourselves and to mankind. Let us therefore embrace a high and noble goal in all our earthly activities so that we can be the human beings that are pleasing to He Who gave us life!

In conclusion, I wish to add that we are also on this earth to find supreme happiness! Happiness is a condition of the soul. It is felt within. It cannot be measured by the earthly senses as such. Our earthly senses (the intellect) want to dimension everything but who can measure the size, weight or height of happiness? It can only be inwardly sensed. At best, the intellect can be self-satisfied, but never really happy. Happiness therefore, depends on the condition of the spirit. A spirit which is unburdened and unconstrained in this Creation will be happy. As long as it knows and adheres to all the Laws of God, happiness comes to it as a reward. He is content. Happiness actually is contentment; spiritual contentment. It means contentment with the present, enjoying and experiencing each moment in all its ramifications, taking in all its blessings and benefits, lessons and maturing thereby.

The happiness we are considering has nothing to do with earthly position and wealth. Wealth does not necessarily bring happiness and there are many materially poor people who are perfectly happy, perfectly content. This happiness comes with an understanding of where our path leads us after our life on earth. It comes with the knowledge that our spiritual ascent is the main purpose of life. This way, we will not be intimidated by any condition we find ourselves: whether rich or poor, sick or healthy, at peace or in conflict as we will be able to recognise why we are having these experiences which add to our spiritual maturity. We will see beyond the outward occurrences but consider them as aids towards our spiritual growth. This way we will be happy no matter our circumstances.

True happiness also comes hand in hand with a deep inner feeling of being protected by the Almighty and having confidence in the Will of God.

In one sentence, the purpose of life is to find true happiness by living in complete harmony with the Will of God, which are expressed in the Laws of Creation; and these Laws will naturally lead us upwards back to our place of origin Paradise in the Spiritual Realm where we shall live eternally in the joyful service of God!

This is the immediate anxious questioning from many who are coming across the Spiritual Work, ‘In the Light of Truth’- the Grail Message, for the first time. Sometimes the question is spoken or pronounced, and most times it remains an inner yearning or desiring, which continues to nudge the bearer.

It would suffice if it is stated that everything under the sun; everything that a human being needs to know in Creation, has been addressed by the Grail Message. This brief writing will give useful hints that would lead every serious seeker to find personal answers to the question: What is the Grail Message, ‘In the Light of Truth’?

Every human being on earth should be concerned about having information on the four ‘Ws’ of life:

  • Who am I?
  • Where have I come from?
  • Why am I here on earth?
  • Where do I go after this earth life?

One should also be concerned about how Creation came into existence, and what propels the forces visibly at work. Since ancient times, these enquiries have been known and summated in the statement: “Man, Know Thyself!” The answer lies in the spiritual and not merely in the intellectual sphere of activities of a human being. Having credible answers to these questions automatically separates a human being from lower animals which just care about their feeding, breeding, and rest.

The most important step in learning something new is often expressed in the willingness to ask questions, and to make the personal effort to find true answers. The ability to do this is inherent in every human being! Therefore, one should not seek to know the contents of the Grail Message by relying on the statements (opinions) of others; especially in these days when we find prevalent spread of deliberate misinformation. There is a sacred injunction which guides every human creature to the admonitions: ‘seek and ye shall find’; ‘knock and the door shall be opened unto you.’

Therefore, the first requirement for finding answers to questions about the Grail Message is an independent-minded, objective, earnest desire to seek after the truth on the subject matter. The tool for seeking after spiritual knowledge is the intuition (also called the voice of the spirit), which is an infallible instrument of personal assessment of any matter.

The author of ‘In the Light of Truth’-the Grail Message, is Abd-ru-shin. He was born on April 18, 1875, in Bischofswerda, near Dresden, Germany and named Oskar Ernst Bernhardt. After his schooling, he commenced a career in business for which he travelled to many locations in Europe and North America. During these travels, he used his innate literary abilities and writing skills to capture impressions and experiences of places and human beings. Through further recognitions relating to his task of bringing inner awakening and spiritual guidance to humanity, Oskar Ernst Bernhardt redirected his gaze away from commercial activities, and by 1923, began publishing his essays as ‘Grail Leaflets’, which sent out the call for spiritual awakening in human beings. In 1926, Abd-ru-shin published his first full book of lectures with the title ‘In the Light of Truth’ – the New Grail Message. Subsequently, the word ‘New’ was dropped and from 1931 onwards, it was called ‘the Grail Message’.

It must be stated, however, that Abd-ru-shin demands of all who may wish to examine ‘In the Light of Truth’- the Grail Message, to seek the value of the teaching by what it brings and not because of who brought it. He wrote: “Gold is gold, whether a prince or a beggar holds it in his hand.”

In the foreword to the Grail Message, Abd-ru-shin, guides the reader and hearer with the following sentences:

“The Message will strike only those who still carry within them a spark of truth, and the yearning to be true human beings. To all such it will become the shining light and staff. It will lead them unswervingly out of all the chaos of the present day confusion.

The following Word does not bring a new religion….”.

‘In the Light of Truth’-the Grail Message, does not bring a new religion or a sect, but simply offers such knowledge of Creation and the Laws of Creation, that will guide every reader or hearer to the gradual recognition and conviction about the Will of God in Creation.

The Spiritual Work, ‘In the Light of Truth, the Grail Message, gives comprehensive knowledge about all issues of life and existence; thereby helping an objective seeker to understand his/her spiritual origin, purpose on earth, the Laws or Order in Creation, as well as the different visible and invisible threads that determine destiny, fate and karma. It is addressed directly to the individual reader or hearer alone because only the individual must take responsibility for everything he/she thinks and does.

‘In the Light of Truth’ – the Grail Message of Abd-ru-shin is presented as a sequential body of lectures, compiled in three Volumes of 168 lectures. The topics cover the enlightenment which human beings need for inner spiritual awakening and consciousness; helping them to clarify errors imbibed from rigid cultural believes, religious dogmas, doctrines and through blind faith.

The topics covered in the Grail Message, among many others, include: God, Divinity, Trinity, Faith, Love, Marriage, Womanhood, Miracles, Prayer, Nature, Spirit, Soul, Survey of Creation, The Holy Grail, The Son of God, The Son of Man, The Role of Woman, Death, Resurrection, Reincarnation, Responsibility, World Events, World Judgment.

The objective reader of the Grail Message is advised to follow the lectures sequentially, starting with Volume 1, and progressing through Volume 2 up to Volume 3. The author of the Grail Message, Abd-ru-shin, also gives, in a publication, explanations about the Ten Commandments of God and the Lord’s Prayer.

There is an unbreakable connection between the Grail Message and the actual Message or teachings of the prophets of the olden times, forerunners of Truth and Jesus Christ.  Indeed the earnest and objective reader would discover that this Source of Spiritual Knowledge is a continuation, consolidation and completion of the teachings of Jesus Christ, as it is another Divine gift of Love from Almighty God.

Abd-ru-shin conveys the following statement as a further guide to the reader and hearer:

“…In the knowledge of Creation which I have given in my Message, and in the related explanations of all the Laws automatically working in Creation, which may also be called the Laws of Nature, the whole weaving of Creation is displayed without a gap; it allows every process to be clearly recognized, and therewith the purpose of man’s whole life. With unassailable logic it also unfolds his “whence” and his “whither”, thus giving an answer to every question, provided man seriously seeks for it.”

The Laws of the Almighty God are unchangeable, inviolable and operate uniformly throughout His creation. As they operate and manifest in small things so they do in big things. After physical death, the soul lives on while the physical/gross material body remains behind because in strict accordance with the laws of origin and cycle, it is absolutely bound to the gross material earth.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brought the message of salvation and redemption to erring mankind and He was obliged to use a body of flesh. At death, His physical body followed the natural course as every other physical body, hence, He did not resurrect in flesh. This fact is exemplified in some biblical accounts; for example, the Bible records at least 12 different appearances of Jesus Christ in the resurrection accounts, beginning with Mary and ending with Paul. One feature that runs through the accounts of personal encounters with Jesus Christ after the crucifixion was that the disciples and close associates did not immediately recognise Him. Mary did not recognize Jesus Christ at first and neither did Mary Magdalene recognize Him immediately. Also, when He appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, they did not recognize Him until He broke bread. We also note that He was able to transcend walls and doors.

From all indications, Jesus was seen after His physical death, but in another body; otherwise, they would all have recognised Him instantly. Besides, it is not possible for the physical body to transcend barriers such as locked doors and walls. Those who were granted the Grace of seeing Him did so, and could only have done so with their finer- non physical eyes. It has to be mentioned that the prevalent difficulty experienced by the average man in readily using the organs of his finer bodies, something that should be natural to him, does not annul the possibility of this occurrence. The spiritual and other intervening worlds “are tangible”, albeit of a different consistency; and each world can be comprehended with the corresponding organs which everyman carries with him.

While on earth, Jesus Christ lived absolutely in accord with the Divine Laws of His Father and He expressly stated that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it. He is and remains the Inborn Son of God and pre-existed the flesh that was bruised and destroyed in Golgotha. The body had served its purpose and done with. If the claim that He resurrected in flesh were to be true, the question then arise; of what use is His earthly physical body in His Divine origin? Jesus, was and eternally is!

The explanation given in this article is based on the author’s understanding of the Work “In The Light of Truth”, The Grail Message by Abd-ru-shin.

Christ’s death on the cross was neither an act willed by God nor a part of Christ’s mission of salvation, but rather a dastardly, evil and murderous action of the religious leaders of that time who saw Jesus as a dangerous and meddlesome troublemaker who was threatening to take away their congregations and therefore their wealth, power and influence.

Christ came down to earth to bring spiritual enlightenment to humanity. To show and explain to us the true Word of His Father. His teachings attracted multitudes of human beings who felt an inner stirring within their souls when He spoke and taught. His teachings upset many of the existing dogmas, this of course upset especially the clergy at that time, who gradually saw their influence diminishing as more and more people flocked in droves to hear Jesus’ teachings. Their attempts to discredit him through asking him tricky questions failed since He always saw through their deceptions and unmasked them. When they were unable to discredit Him, they now sought to attack him and cause him physical harm. However, the huge throng of people surrounding Jesus made this impossible. It was only through the treachery and betrayal of one of his disciples that allowed them to seize, arrest and falsely accuse him of blasphemy and claiming to be who He was, the Son of God.

Now, if during his trial Jesus had, to avoid prosecution, said that He was not the Son of God, He would have saved His life but His mission of salvation would have failed because those who had hitherto believed in His teachings and His divine origin would have lost their certainty and most likely their conviction about the truths that Christ had brought. Jesus Christ however maintained His stand even in the face of a painful and tortuous death. With His death on the cross, He placed a stamp and seal on His earthly mission. He clearly showed that all that He had done and taught were done on behalf of His father, that He was the Son of God.

It is instructive that at the crucifixion it was reported that a roman soldier said, “Truly this is the Son of God”. The crucifixion however does not absolve humanity of sin, rather it increases their guilt and drags them down deeper. Christ being without sin cannot carry humanity’s sin away. Each person reaps what he sows and is accountable for his actions. God is love but also justice. Finally, if the crucifixion of Christ has been God willed he would never have uttered the intercessory prayer “father forgive them, for they know not what they do”.

For many who might find this interpretation of events contrary to the view held, i.e. that Christ’s death was a divinely willed action that was supposed to provide a propitiatory sacrifice for the sins of mankind, it would be good for them to read the parable of the wicked husband-men, where Christ foresees his death at the hands of a sinful, wicked and depraved mankind. We are told in this parable quite clearly, that humanity have mismanaged and usurped the rights of the owner i.e. the Creator and when asked by the servants of the owner i.e. the prophets to deliver the fruits of the vineyard, have scorned, beaten and in some cases killed them. When the owner at last sends his son i.e. Jesus in the hope that they would show him the necessary reverence, they seized the son, cast him out of the vineyard and slew him.

This parable is quite clear and in no way supports the notion of a washing away of humanity’s sin through Christ’s death on the cross.

The explanation given in this article is based on the author’s understanding of the Work “In The Light of Truth”, The Grail Message by Abd-ru-shin.

The way to paradise lies in recognising the Will of the Creator and obeying that Will. Profession of a particular faith or religion plays no role in this process. What is important is the extent to which the individual’s faith is genuine. As written in the bible it is not those who call out “Lord, Lord” but those who carry out the Will of the Creator who will attain to paradise. Adherence to a particular religion or faith plays no role here.

When the word “pagan” is used, it is often made in reference to peoples who believe in the existence of many gods. In the religious belief of the ancient Romans and Greeks for instance they recognised the existence of a variety of gods and goddesses who they connected with activities in nature and named accordingly. Traditional societies, including present day ones, where the people still live in close connection to nature all tend to evidence similar features – recognition of diverse gods and goddesses whose activity is linked to natural processes- the growing of crops, control of the weather, regulation of the seasons etc.

The truth of the matter is that there are nature beings who exist and whose area of activity is closely connected to all that which we call nature. These nature beings are servants of the Almighty. They tend to plants and crops, they guide the activity of rivers, seas and oceans. They are active in the natural processes going on deep down in the recesses of the earth. The strength and direction of the winds and currents is guided by them. In short, they maintain the necessary balance and harmony of nature. Their activity makes it possible for us to live on this earth.

Peoples of ancient times and even now those who still live in a predominantly rural environment and who still, through the nature of their daily work, come often in close contact to nature, were able to recognise these beings, first in their activity and then to the point where they could actually see them and communicate with them. They helped and still help human beings by showing them and explaining to them how the natural environment around them works, by for instance showing to them which herbs or plants are beneficial for certain ailments etc.

The peoples of that time erroneously worshipped these beings as gods and goddesses because that was or is the level to which their spiritual maturity had reached. With time however and through increasing inner maturity the recognition would come that these are only servants of a higher power and slowly they would come to the knowledge of this higher power, this one God. This is the natural process of development as willed by the Creator.

When we in our presumed superiority look down on people who still believe in these natural beings as heathens or misled ones, we would do better to pause and reflect: these nature beings are servants of the most High, they carry out his Will immediately, precisely, to the minutest detail. They are examples to us in how we should stand in our service to the Creator. They are also inclined to help us and show us nature’s secrets.

Who is better helped? Who stands more in accordance with the Will of the Creator? The one who has come to the recognition of these benevolent beings and follows their promptings and advice or the one who is blind to their existence and goes around in ignorance claiming that they are illusions, phantasies of the human mind or “fairy tales”?

The truth of the matter is that the knowledge of the workings of the nature beings is a necessary step in the development of the human spirit in coming to a correct recognition of the Creator. Recognition of the Creator lies in the recognising His Will. His Will is expressed through the Creation-Laws, the Laws of Nature in and through which the nature beings work. The knowlegde of their activity is therefore an invaluable bridge to recognition of the Holy Will of the Creator.

Like so many expressions man has adopted, the coinage ‘Good Friday’ has come to stay more out of general usage than from deep understanding of its significance.

In general thinking, the death on the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ served as propitiatory sacrifice which brought redemption from out of sins for mankind, especially those who profess a belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour. To this extent, therefore, Christ’s death on the cross was thought to be necessary and good. With this thinking which has gained strong ground in the whole Christendom, the day such act occurred then became ‘Good Friday’.

A close examination, however, of the entire history of the events surrounding the birth, mission and eventual death of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, does not support the thinking held by many about the reason for his death. On the contrary, everything points to the fact that Christ’s death was a serious crime of cold blooded murder of a Truth Bringer recorded against mankind. The first clue to this realisation came from the last words uttered by Christ Himself: ‘Father, forgive them for they know not what they do….’

This prayer of forgiveness also carries along with it, a tone of accusation. If His killing was a good act meant to wash away sins, Christ would not have prayed His Father to forgive those that carried it out. Indeed one aspect of the ‘good’ that came out of that event for mankind was this prayer of intercession said by Christ. If He had not said it, mankind would have counted on total annihilation.

Then also it was recorded that the natural elements revolted, and there were earth tremors and the veil covering the Holy of Holies tore into two– all acts of condemnation against mankind. On top of that, Judas Iscariot, the chief culprit, realising the full import of his wrong acts, tried to return the bribe he earlier received and eventually committed suicide. All these could not be called ‘good’; instead these were very sad occurrences, and the whole of Creation stood in deep grief and mourning , for mankind again rejected the Divine Hand of Help extended to them.

For the purpose of His Mission of Love, however, Christ stood in triumph, for He boldly faced death and thereby put a firm final seal of conviction upon his mission of sacrifice. The sacrifice was in bringing the Word of Truth and Light to a humanity almost encompassed by the darkness, knowing full well the possibility of being attacked. A celebration of Good Friday should therefore be a sober moment for mankind, and an opportunity to re-energise one’s volition to live in accordance with Christ’s true teachings, as the way towards man’s salvation.

A belief that Christ’s death on the cross will bring spiritual salvation to one is a delusion and would bring no spiritual benefit. Christ’s message has to be absorbed and lived by those who profess to follow Him, and therein lies that ‘good’ in His mission.

The explanation given in this article is based on the author’s understanding of the Work “In The Light of Truth”, The Grail Message by Abd-ru-shin.

The Law of attraction stipulates that all that is similar will be attracted to each other. Sayings like “birds of a feather flock together”, and “like father like son” seem to reflect the workings of this Law.

For the human spirit, there is an inherent ability to attract things just as a magnet will attract metals. This Law of Nature ensures that man will not attract all sorts of things to itself in a wild confusion. To maintain strict order, this Law ensures that only what is similar to the nature of the human spirit is attracted to it.

In this, our thoughts, words, actions and even our aspirations play a very important part. So a person who lives in a particular state of mind will attract a similar reality to himself. For example a person who lives in perpetual fear of attack by enemies seen and unseen will eventually experience harassment in reality. In some cases this can lead to depression and serious mental illness!

One can on the other hand cooperate with the workings of this Law. For example, if you are a new business owner just starting out in your business and you desire that only those who are punctual and honest are those you require in that business- you start off by being punctual yourself. Pay yourself a salary and do not take company money anyhow. You will find that only those who have the same work style like you will be attracted to join you in the business. If you wish for a good spouse (wife/husband) you start out by becoming a better human being first and only a person that complements you will be attracted to you.

On a lighter note I tell my friends that if they want to conduct a quick experiment of this Law, all they need do is to invite about 40 people to a party. After a while during the party, they will find that people will seat in groups that depict their interests. People who work in the same place will move close to each other, those who enjoy talking about football will come together, and the beer drinkers will form separate circles!

You can work with this Law to change an undesired circumstance. For example, where a man decides that he is tired of alcohol abuse, he can start by forsaking the company of his drunkard friends and cultivate better friends. With this, his own lifestyle will change gradually in accordance with the measure of his inner change.

So, like will always attract like. And that is why this saying is true: show me your friends and I will tell you who you are!

The explanation given in this article is based on the author’s understanding of the Work “In The Light of Truth”, The Grail Message by Abd-ru-shin.
